Chapter 2: Raiders and Roadblocks

South Roadblock

Newton’s Village

0815 Local

Aaron Connoly, former varsity quarterback and town golden boy, was bored. Actually, ‘bored’ did not begin to cover the mind numbing listlessness he felt. Standing next to a cop car looking down the blacktop was the most tedious thing he had ever done in his life. Sitting through American History his senior year, the previous grand champion of boredom, wasn’t even in the same zip code as standing around for eight hours waiting for a whole bunch of nothing to come rolling up 13 Highway.

Clinton got levelled, we all saw it two weeks ago, he thought. There haven’t been any refugees for several days. Standing outside of a convenience store that had gone out of business a year before the rocks fell has lost its charm the first day he’d gotten soaked to the bone.

Don’t understand why we can’t sit in the fucking trucks, he thought. The two large dump trucks were parked nose to nose across the two lane black top, preventing vehicular movement the two miles to Newton’s Village. Stretching his six foot two frame, Connoly ran a hand through his light brown hair as he looked up at the sky. The rain was threatening to resume at any moment, but for now he was going to enjoy not taking a shower with his clothes on.

At least I get to see Janet when all this is over and done with, Aaron thought. While his blue eyes, athletic build and handsome features meant he could have had any woman in Newton’s Village, Janet and he had been on again, off again for almost their entire time in high school.

Strange how all the bullshit goes away when you’re looking at possibly dying, he thought. It was his family that had been the cause of most of their break ups. Convinced that Janet was merely trailer trash that saw her body as a means to entrap Aaron, the elder Connoly’s had done everything possible short of sending him to a monastery to throw his girlfriend off the scent. Still, for some reason they’d always found each other again. Aaron smiled as he thought of the short blonde, pausing in eating his breakfast while leaning against the convenience store’s dilapidated wall.

“Hey, Connoly, you want to get your head out of your ass and join us?!” Officer Joe Long barked from the roadblock, snapping him out of his reverie. Aaron jumped, nearly spilling his food on the ground. Long was always busting his balls, and it looked like today was going to be no exception. The dumb peckerwood had been the type of kid that Aaron picked on in High School, gangly, awkward, and such an easy target. The deputy was standing twenty feet away in the middle of the highway, the veins bulging out in his neck.

“I still got five minutes left!” Aaron shouted back, shoveling another forkful of food into his mouth. The oatmeal was as bland and tasteless as it looked.

I’m sick of this shit, Aaron thought, forcing himself to swallow.
